CAP the Carbon: Winter 2017 - Fall 2018Currently we are in constant communication with the administration to about updating the Climate Action Plan. There is no active campaign right now but we are working with the SSC to make sure the administration takes the necessary steps to reducing their emissions. This new Climate Action Plan should include stopping the use of natural gas to heat campus buildings, offsetting emissions from faculty travel, improving infrastructure to be energy efficient, and setting annual, realistic goals with student input.

Background |
In 2007, the University of Oregon signed on to the American College & University President’s Climate Commitment (ACUPCC) along with 800 other institutions with the goal of being carbon neutral by 2050. In 2010, the university’s first CAP was written, following this goal. However, without many specific targets along the way, the campus has made little progress in reaching this goal. In winter 2017, CJL members started meeting with President Schill and Steve Mital, Director of the Office of Sustainability, to approach the idea of forming a shorter term CAP with more achievable targets.
